Spilling wine on your clothing or on a carpet is one of those horror moments. First there is a pause whilst everyone puts down their wine glasses, considers what has happened, and then the suggestions start. Opinions vary across the board and everyone will want to give theirs, even if they all contradict each other. Here we take a look at the best action to take if and when you spill different types of wine
Red wine stains. If you don’t approach the stain in the right way, red wine can be a permanent addition to any fabric. There is an old wives tale that you should pour white wine on a red wine stain to get it out but this is rarely the best option. What works a whole lot better is pouring over the stain a mix of talcum powder and a little ammonia. Give the powder a good couple of hours to soak up all the wine and another couple to dry out itself, before hoovering the whole lot up. White wine vinegar is another substance that works well on red wine stains as it stops the binding of the tannin to the fabric and makes it easier to clean off. Leave again for 30min and then mop up with hot water and detergent
White wine stains. There is a great deal less tannin (wine colouring) in white wine and so this means it is less of a headache when spilt. The best option for getting up white wine is sponging it with hot soapy water. The smell can then be tackled using either a carpet cleaner or talcum powder again.
Champagne. If you have an accident with champagne, you might want to think about leaving it for a bit until you get round to cleaning it off the fabric. This is due to the fact champagne as lots of bubbles which actively break down dirt that is ingrained in fabric. Placing glass vases or crystal vases over the spill will keep it from drying out and the cleaning effect will go on for longer.
